Baku - On May 13, 2019 Mr. Vladimir Gjorgjiev, the Chief of IOM Mission to Azerbaijan met with Mr. Rovshan Rzayev, the chairman of the Azerbaijan State Committee for Refugees and IDPs.

Mr. Gjorgjiev, provided information about the project Kahriz that is implemented by IOM in Azerbaijan in which IDPs are part of the project beneficiaries. Mr. Gjorgjiev said that there are two new projects proposals in the pipeline submitted for approval, which are related to assistance to vulnerable population including  IDPs . He said IOM mission would like to further expand cooperation with the State institutions including State Committee within these projects and look forward for positive collaboration.

The chairman of the State Committee informed Mr. Gjorgjiev about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the humanitarian problems caused by it. It was stated that the conflict forced 1 million 200 thousand refugees and the internally displaced person to leave their homes and because of that conflict the country faced serious problems. As he noted the scale of work done by government in Azerbaijan to improve the living conditions and material security of refugees and internally displaced persons is vast.

The chairman of the State Committee also spoke about the activities of international organizations on humanitarian assistance to refugees and internally displaced persons in the country. Mr. Rzayev emphasized the importance of the projects implemented by IOM in this direction and expressed his gratitude.

During the meeting opportunities for cooperation, proposals for new projects were discussed.
