IOM Azerbaijan’s contribution to the protection of women against violence was appreciated
Baku - On 25 November - the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women the United Nations Office in Azerbaijan and the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan have launched a 16-day campaign between November 25 and December 10, 2019. On this day the inception Conference of 16 Days Activisim Campaign “Stop Violence Against Women and Girls” is organized at Boulevard Hotel by UNFPA and State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs. IOM Azerbaijan was represented at this event by Vladimir Gjorgjiev, IOM Azerbaijan Chief of Mission.
Speakers represented by the government, UN agencies, embassies in the country and local NGOs talked about measures already taken and what else should be taken to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and girls, to remove obstacles to gender equality and the advancement and empowerment of women, necessity of promotion of women’s economic independence, including employment, and ensuring equal access for all women to productive resources, opportunities and public services.
In Azerbaijan, many women that faced violence usually find support in special shelters of the local NGOs. Some of those shelters are supported by IOM Azerbaijan to preventively address the vulnerability to human trafficking. The Head of the “Clean World” Public Union to support women Ms. Mehriban Zeynalova in her speech appreciated the support of IOM Azerbaijan in improving their shelter facilities standards which currently became a home for women and girls – victims of domestic violence.
Mr. Onno Kerves, the Ambassador of the Netherlands in the Azerbaijan Republic in his speach mentioned the project “Addressing the Needs of Victims of Trafficking in Azerbaijan Through Provision of Direct Assistance and Shelter Facilities Upgrade" implemented by IOM Azerbaijan and financed by the Netherlands Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. The project seeks to assist the Government of Azerbaijan and the civil society through the provision of direct assistance to the victims and potential victims of human trafficking and shelters’ upgrade.
All participants involved in addressing this issue agreed to continue to work towards eliminating the root causes trough proactive awareness raising, socio-economic and education measures.
