Positive cooperation between IOM Azerbaijan and the State Customs Committee
Baku - On 30 June 2020, Mr. Vladimir Gjorgjiev, the Chief of IOM Mission to Azerbaijan held online meeting with Javad Gasimov, the Deputy Chairman of the State Customs Committee to deliberate and provide updates on matters related to the project “Enhancing Passenger Processing Capacities in Azerbaijan in Line with International Best Practices and Standards” implemented by IOM Azerbaijan and financed by the IOM Development Fund.
Within this project IOM assist the Government of Azerbaijan in establishing Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR). This new systems is coordinated in collaborative manner, with participation of IOM, the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), the UK Border Force and local institutions like Customs, border and migration management agencies, air carriers and other relevant stakeholders.
Talking about the recent handover of computers and office equipment by IOM Azerbaijan to the State Committee Mr. Vladimir Gjorgjiev reaffirmed IOM’s commitment to strengthen operational capacities of the Customs Committee which contributes to border security, counter illegal migration, terrorism, and serious economic crimes.
Touching upon on COVID-19 Mr. Vladimir Gjorgjiev expressed his hope that a new policy paper on cross-border mobility amid and after COVID-19 prepared by IOM will help customs authorities in their work. He also expressed readiness to support any future action in this area.
Expressing his appreciation for provided support and donation Mr. Javad Gasimov said that this successful partnership will contribute to the enhancement of knowledge and skills of customs officials in line with international best practices and the introduction of new technologies.
