Kahriz Rehabilitation Project implemented by IOM Azerbaijan is presented at UN
On 24 March 2023, within the framework of the UN Water Conference, a special session was held on Azerbaijan's experiences in this field. The session was organized at the initiative of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Agriculture, Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan Melioration and Water Management JSC, the Azerbaijan Mission of the International Organization for Migration, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and the organization of the Arizona State University of the United States.
During the discussions with the participation of government representatives, local and international experts, Mr Manuel Marques Pereira, Head of Migration, Environment & Climate Change Division of the Department of Peace and Development Coordination, IOM HQ, noted that access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene, as per the Sustainable Development Goal 6, is among the most basic human needs for health and well-being for migrants and displaced persons. As an example of one of the successful IOM projects, he presented the Project of Rehabilitation of Kahriz as an alternative and sustainable water source (https://lnkd.in/eSD5XJqm), implemented by IOM Azerbaijan with the financial support of KOICA .
It should be noted that goals and objectives related to global warming, depletion of freshwater sources, and water issues were discussed at the conference.
