Prospects of cooperation between IOM Azerbaijan and ANAMA were discussed
On 23 February 2023, Vugar Suleymanov, Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) met with Vladimir Georgiyev, the Chief of IOM Mission to Azerbaijan, and Dominique Bollier, IOM’s regional security specialist for Europe and Central Asia.
During the meeting, Vugar Suleymanov provided information on the creation of the Agency, its goals, and tasks, as well as the work done in the direction of combating the current mine threat in Azerbaijan.
Vladimir Georgiyev informed officials about the current activities of IOM in Azerbaijan. It was brought to attention that the IOM currently pays special attention to the rehabilitation of kahrizes - traditional water-supply systems. Within the IOM’s project, two kahrizes located in the Jabrail district will be rehabilitated.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the assessment of mine and other explosive munitions contamination of the kahirizes located in the regained areas, implementation of demining operations for their safe restoration, assistance to mine victims, and possible cooperation prospects in other directions.
IOM Azerbaijan and ANAMA have been cooperating since 2007 in rendering assistance to survivors of landmine accidents.
The two organizations have effectively implemented the “Socio-Economic Reintegration Program for Mine Victims in Azerbaijan” covering 2007-2012s. As part of this program, 190 landmine victims were trained on business and management skills. Some 140 of those were provided with microcredit to enlarge their businesses and expand their activities.”
In 2013, IOM Azerbaijan and ANAMA signed an agreement on cooperation, which stipulated international and local cooperation in areas such as mine action, including stockpile destruction, mine victim assistance, mine risk education, human resources training, and experience exchange.
