The UNNM for Azerbaijan for the 360-degree and whole-of-society approach was successfully launched today
Baku - On July 17 2020, IOM Azerbaijan held a virtual launching event devoted to the establishment of UN Network on Migration in the Republic of Azerbaijan for the purpose of further successful implementation of UN Global Compact for Migration adopted in 2018. The event was attended by more than 30 participants in presence of UN Agencies, Government Institutions, Diplomatic core, Civil Sector Organization, Academia and Private sector.
Vladimir Gjorgjiev, the Chief of IOM Mission to Azerbaijan in his opening remarks gave a brief information about the history of idea of UN Network on Migration which was adopted at a meeting of the Executive Committee on 23 May 2018 to ensure effective, coordinated system-wide support to the implementation of the GCM.
Regarding the local UN Network on Migration Vladimir Gjorgjiev said that it will work closely with the State Migration Service, and all relevant Governmental entities, International Organizations, NGOs, civil society organizations, Academia, Private Sector and other entities dealing with migration issues in Azerbaijan, to promote effective migration management, and mechanisms to support the protection of the rights and well-being of migrants and communities in a coherent, holistic manner, in line with the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and in accordance with State Migration Strategy.
Speaking at the event, UN Resident Coordinator Ghulam Isaczai highlighted the importance establishing UN Network on Migration for Azerbaijan and said that it will support the Government of Azerbaijan in its implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the mainstreaming of migration into its policies and programmes.
The Chief of the State Migration Service Vusal Huseynov, in his speech highly appreciated the idea of establishment of the network and the steps taken by IOM and its partners in this direction.
Other participants in their speech expressed their readiness to provide the necessary support for the network to be established soon in Azerbaijan.
At the end, the exchange of views was held, opinions and suggestions were provided.
